Offboarding Germany: Back to the USA in 4 Weeks – A Case Study
Moving abroad is about much more than just packing suitcases. When roots in Germany are pulled up after more than a decade, an administrative marathon begins. A challenging example from our daily work in the Rhine-Main region: an American client had to close down his household in Wiesbaden and return to the U.S. East Coast within just four weeks.
The Challenge: Maximum Time Pressure
Once we took on the assignment, the timeframe was fixed: the return flight was booked, and the flat had to be handed over in a renovated condition in exactly 21 days. This was a classic case for our Departure Management, where efficiency and legal precision are the top priorities.
The Structured Offboarding Process: Leaving Nothing to Chance
To ensure a smooth departure, we work through a standardised checklist, which in our client’s case was handled under extreme pressure.
Administrative Procedures & Deregistration
The first and most important step was deregistration at the local Citizens’ Office (Bürgerbüro) in the city of Wiesbaden.
Important Note: Deregistration is mandatory when moving abroad. Delays can lead to fines. Furthermore, the deregistration certificate is the key document for exercising special right of termination with service providers such as mobile phone companies, insurance providers, etc.
Logistics & International Removal
Within three weeks, we organised a reliable removal company that provided a shipping container, professionally packed the entire inventory, and initiated the shipment to the USA.
Contract Management & Administration
A smooth departure involves terminating numerous contracts. We took care of:
- Utilities: Electricity, gas, and water.
- Connectivity: Internet, mobile phone, and the broadcasting licence fee (Rundfunkbeitrag/‘GEZ’).
- Mail & Mobility: Setting up a mail forwarding service and returning the resident parking permit.
- Finances: Scheduled closing of the bank account after all remaining payments were processed.
Special Case: Car Sale – Flexibility through Power of Attorney
Support often doesn’t end once the client has boarded their flight. A vital part of this assignment was the sale of the car. Although a buyer was quickly found at an attractive price, a classic hurdle arose: the vehicle registration document (Fahrzeugbrief / Zulassungsbescheinigung Teil II) could not be found. Thanks to a comprehensive power of attorney, we were able to continue the process even after the client had left the country:
- Apply for a new vehicle registration document.
- Navigate the bureaucratic hurdles with the registration office (Zulassungsstelle).
- Successfully complete the sale six weeks later and transfer the proceeds.
